Police Uniform ‘Should Be A National Standard’

There should be a national standard for police uniform, Hampshire Police Federation has said, as the first-ever national police uniform and equipment survey takes place.

Researchers at Lancaster University, in partnership with PFEW and the NPCC, are asking 200,000 police officers and staff across England and Wales about their experiences of wearing their standard issue uniforms and equipment.

Hampshire Police Federation Chair Zoë Wakefield said: “This survey has got to be a good thing and hopefully we will get some form of national uniform.

“Goodness knows how much money is wasted by 43 different forces doing all different things with uniform. If we had one standard uniform supplied by one company for everyone, it would just make life so much simpler.”

She added: “Currently, different forces have different protection from their body armour. The Met has a higher level of stab protection than some more rural forces. But surely it should all be a national standard.”
