The Government Need To Provide A Fairer Pay Mechanism For Officers

Hampshire Police Federation has urged the Government to relinquish control from pay reviews and help to provide a fairer mechanism for officers.
The Government currently sets the parameters for what the pay review body may consider but it is not bound by the recommendations made.
Hampshire Federation outgoing Chair Zoe Wakefield has insisted the process should be independent and the outcome legally binding.
She said: “The Government shouldn’t then be able to go and change it to suit themselves.
“Why they think it’s OK to mess around with our pay… Well, we all know it’s because the Government don’t care about policing.”
Zoe said she was not convinced the new Labour administration would improve the situation and urged officers to “keep fighting” for a better pay review system.
She continued: “We’re struggling to recruit, we’re struggling to retain so – not just the Federation, the NPCC – they should all be fighting for it as well.
“Having an open and transparent pay mechanism and fair pay for police officers will help recruitment and retention.”
